The 2012-13 women’s basketball team joined the 2006- 07 squad for the only team national titles in school history when they finished with a 34-0 record which remains a Division III record for wins in a season. The Tigers outscored their opponents by nearly 26 points per game. After winning their second North Coast Athletic Conference title in as many years, the Tigers earned the conference’s automatic qualification into the Division III postseason by winning the NCAC Tournament.
The Tigers’ dominance continued in the NCAA tournament as they won their opening two games at home by 30 and 27 points, respectively. DePauw remained at home for the next two rounds and advanced to the national semifinals for the third time in school history with double-digit wins over WashU and Christopher Newport. A three-point national semifinal win over Williams followed before the Tigers faced Wis.-Whitewater in the national title game and never trailed on the way to a 69-51 victory. Ellie Pearson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the finals and Kate Walker joined her on the all-tournament team. Head coach Kris Huffman was selected the Division III coach of the year by D3hoops.com and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and Alex Gasaway was a D3hoops.com all-America second team choice. Walker was a WBCA honorable mention all-America selection.
The Tigers finished the year ranked second in Division III in 3-point field goal percentage and third in scoring margin, fewest turnovers per game and assist-to-turnover ratio. DePauw was also fifth in rebound margin, sixth in scoring defense and ninth in field goal percentage.
