EDWIN M. LINDSAY ’39 earned varsity letters in both tennis and basketball for the Tigers. He led the 1938 and 1939 tennis teams to a combined 17-3 record, including two wins each over Indiana and Purdue. In 1938, he won the Indiana Collegiate singles title by defeating Notre Dame’s Bill Fay and finished second in doubles with Johnny Lynn. In his senior season he teamed with Paul Souder to win the Indiana Collegiate doubles title by defeating teams from Notre Dame and Indiana in the semifinals and finals, respectively. In 1939 Lindsay competed in the national intercollegiate tournament at Haverford College after participating in the district competition at Northwestern University. He also was a two-year starter in basketball.
Lindsay earned a Bachelor of Arts in physics and graduated with distinction while also winning the Walker Cup. He received a Master of Science in physics from University of Minnesota. Lindsay was a physicist in the U.S. Navy’s Ordinance Laboratory from 1941-45 and won the Meritorious Civilian Service Award. He then moved to Cornell Laboratory where he served in several capacities ranging from research physicist to facilities manager. He left Cornell in 1960 to work for Owens-Corning Fiberglass where he was director of research. Lindsay, who passed away in 1982, is the father of Polly, Peggy, Robert and Edwin, Jr.
