Nelson earned all-Illinois-Indiana Collegiate Soccer Conference honors in 1977, 1978 and 1979 and was the team MVP in 1978 and 1979. His 49 career goals rank second in program history and his 100 career points are fourth. He scored 20 goals in 1978 which still ranks in a tie for second. On three occasions he scored a program-record four goals in a game including the final game of his career when he scored all four in a 4-1 win over Wabash. Nelson had an additional three games in which he tallied three goals each. In the finale of the 1978 season, he delivered the game-winning goal with five seconds left in the second overtime to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Little Giants. Nelson was part of the 1977 squad which earned the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III postseason.

During his time at DePauw he served as president of Beta Theta Pi and Union Board treasurer. An economics major, Nelson earned an executive MBA from Harvard and embarked on a career with Cabot Corporation rising to a Global Senior Executive and later in private distribution. Nelson has remained involved with local and global Christian organizations as well as coaching at a college prep Christian school in McKinney, Texas coaching girls basketball and varsity football. He and his wife, Kerri, reside in Texas and are parents to two children Blake (DePauw ’09) and Paige (Arkansas ‘13).
