Dr. Scott W. Shafer (Class of 1970) earned a B.A. in Religion and Psychology. After receiving a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology, he worked more than 30 years as at the Des Moines Child & Adolescent Guidance Center. Shafer served as the president of the Iowa Psychological Association and chairman of both the Iowa Board of Psychology Examiners and the Iowa Mental Health Planning Council. He is currently employed as a medical consultant for the Iowa Disability Determination Services.

A three year letterman, Shafer scored the most points on the track team in both 1968 and 1969 and was awarded Gold Brick awards and MVP watches both years. While the cross country coach was on sabbatical, Shafer assisted Elmer McCall in coaching the DePauw team to the ICC championship with meet record times. Shafer qualified for the national NCAA meet and finished second in the Mid-East regional. Shafer received the Sigma Delta Chi Scholar Athlete Award in 1970. Track records set by Shafer in the late ‘60’s still stand as DePauw’s best the in outdoor 800 meter dash and the indoor 4 by 400 relay.

Shafer and his wife, Nancy Brady Shafer (Class of 1970), reside in Des Moines, Iowa.
