Tom Brunkow was one of the finest singles and doubles players in many decades at DePauw University. A native of Champaign, Ill., he was the number one singles and doubles player for each of his three years of varsity eligibility. Not eligible for the varsity team as a freshman he, nevertheless, defeated the reigning ICC champion, his fraternity brother, in a specially arranged match that year. He was undefeated in ICC competition in each of these years and was singles champion all three years. Brunkow was a member of Beta Theta Pi and graduated from DePauw in 1961 with a major in philosophy and religion. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Yale University and a Doctorate of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary. He has been a United Methodist Church pastor in the Maryland-Washington, D.C., area for more than 30 years, and is currently senior pastor at the Concord-St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Bethesda, Md. Still active in the sport of tennis, Tom and his son Benjamin are currently ranked #7 nationally in the Father and Son Open Division; and Tom, individually, is ranked #53 in the age 55 division of the International Tennis Foundation. He has traveled extensively on church mission teams and has served on two international pastoral exchanges.
