Dick Peeler was both an artist and an athlete. An Indianapolis native, he taught art at Tech High School for seven years before returning to DePauw in 1958. While teaching ceramics, sculpture and photography, he developed a loyal following among both students and customers of his high-fired stoneware. In 1972 Peeler left the DePauw faculty, and with his wife and partner, Marj, worked for more than a quarter-century as a full-time potter. Peeler’s ongoing connection to DePauw, however, was through athletics. He was a regular and intense competitor in noon-time basketball games. And for more than 40 years, his second career was filming Tiger football games. In every kind of weather, and from high and hazardous vantages, he produced game films of the finest artistic quality. Shortly after his last Monon Bell game, Dick Peeler passed away on Dec. 22, 1998.
