CHARLES “BIFF” GEISS ’62 earned three varsity letters in baseball and garnered all-Indiana Collegiate Conference honors three times, including first team distinction in 1961 and 1962. As a sophomore he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.25 earned run average and batted .313. During his junior season, the southpaw pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against Evansville and also struck out a school-record 19 batters in a 3-2, 12-inning win over St. Joseph’s. His 77 strikeouts in 1962 were a school record for 37 years and currently ranks third. He also recorded a 1.29 earned run average in 1962 which still ranks fifth in school history. Geiss helped lead the Tigers to NCAA regional appearances in 1960 and 1961 and picked up a win over Wittenberg in game two of the 1960 regional.
After graduating from DePauw with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, Geiss served as a foreign languages teacher and baseball and basketball coach at Valparaiso (Ind.) Community Schools for 40 years. From 2002-10 he was an adjunct professor at Purdue University Northwest. For 30 years he coordinated a summer daytime baseball program through Valparaiso Parks and Recreation and still volunteers in the community. Geiss and his wife Barbara have three children Ellen, Paul and Laura.
