Anthony "Tony" J. de Nicola '86 chose to attend DePauw as one of the school’s first Management Fellows. He graduated summa cum laude with an economics major and a minor in computational math. He was recognized as the outstanding economics student during his junior and senior years, and he was a member of the leadership honoraries Mortar Board and Gold Key. He was tapped for Phi Beta Kappa as a junior, was a Rhodes Scholar candidate and he received the Walker Cup and delivered the commencement address at graduation.

Tony earned three letters in football and one in baseball. As a three-year starter at quarterback, Tony set numerous DePauw passing records.  During his senior season, he was elected Captain and led the team to an 8-2 record and a 20th place national ranking.  He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player,selected as a GTE Academic All American, awarded a NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and selected as a National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete.  He concluded his DePauw career as the school’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 41 and threw for 4,010 total yards. During his senior season he set new school marks for touchdown passes in a single season (24) and a game (5), which he did on three separate occasions, including during the thrilling 35-31 comeback victory over 13th rated Dayton at Blackstock Stadium.

He worked as a financial analyst with Goldman Sachs prior to earning his M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard University in1990. He is a partner with Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, a New York private equity investment firm, where he serves on the Management Committee. He serves on the board of directors for a number of the firm’s private and public companies, including as Chairman of the Board with Valor Communications and DexMedia.

Tony and his wife Christie, have three children: Kaley, Ted and CJ. He enjoys coaching their basketball and football teams. His philanthropic interests focus on improving inner-city education and helping Catholic schools. He serves on the board of The Posse Foundation, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund for the Archdiocese of New York, and Sacred Heart School, an inner-city Catholic school in Jersey City. Tony has served DePauw as President of the Alumni Association and on its Board of Trustees.
