David Sheperd, originally from Bronxville, N.Y., was a shot putter and discus thrower in high school. He continued his track prowess upon entering DePauw in 1947. He broke school and conference records in the shot put and discus almost immediately. By his junior year, he had bettered the Little State discus record, which had been held by Ball State for seven years. In meet after meet he bettered his own records as well as conference records. His records for the shot put stood for 10 years and the discus record was his until 1976. He was undefeated in dual meets in each of his three years of varsity eligibility. A member of Phi Kappa Psi, he graduated in 1951 with an area major in the social sciences. Following DePauw, he joined Corning, Inc., where he rose to the office of president of the Corning of Canada and Corning of Australia subsidiaries. He has consulted on corporate turnarounds and has founded and led a number of firms headquartered in Canada. He has been an active leader in numerous trade and community organizations and has held volunteer positions of leadership with United Way, the Chamber of Commerce and the Presbyterian Church.
