Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw nearly erased a five-goal deficit, but fell just short in an 8-7 loss to Calvin in the season opener for both squads at Reavis Stadium.
Danny Karbowski scored the season's first goal with 9:39 left in the opening quarter, but Calvin tallied the final three of the period and the first two of the second to take a 5-1 lead. Quinn Cashion's score with 9:10 left in the half stopped the Knights' run, but Calvin tacked on one more for a 6-2 halftime advantage.
The Knights extended the lead to 7-2 early in the third before DePauw started its comeback. Karbowski and Chris Schaefer closed the gap to 7-4 with third-quarter scores before Beckett Tasker made it 7-5 with 12:47 left in the contest.
Josh Newhouse's fourth goal of the game stopped the Tigers' run and extended the Calvin lead to 8-5 with 8:56 remaining. Schaefer scored with 5:01 left and Noah Curland cut the deficit to one with 31 seconds left, but Calvin won the ensuing faceoff and held on for the win.
Karbowski and Schaefer each scored twice, while Newhouse had four for Calvin and Thomas Smith added a pair.
Calvin outshot DePauw, 36-27, and held a 30-20 edge in ground balls. The Knights won nine of the 15 faceoffs as Chase Sparling won 8-of-13 and DePauw's Matthew Roman 6-of-15. Patrick Lawton totaled eight saves for DePauw and Evan Griffin had 12 for Calvin.
DePauw returns to action on Saturday, February 26, with a 1 p.m. game at Ohio Northern.
