DePauw Falls to Oberlin in Final Minute; Tigers Headed to First NCAC Tourney in Program History

Greencastle, Ind. - Oberlin's John Sutherland scored with just 35 seconds left to give the visiting Yeomen a 14-13 North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC, but earned their first-ever bid to the NCAC Tournament. The Tigers travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 25, for a semifinal contest at a time to be announced. Oberlin closed its season at 8-7 overall and 3-5 in NCAC play.

DePauw scored the game's first four goals in the opening 6:07, but Oberlin quickly came back and evened the game at 5-5 after the first period. The Yeomen outscored the Tigers, 5-1, in the second for a 10-6 halftime lead. 

The Tigers got back into the contest by outscoring the Yeomen, 4-0, in the third including a pair in a 34-second span late in the stanza to even the contest at 10-10.

Sutherland's two goals early in the fourth gave Oberlin a 12-10 advantage before Nate Greenberg and Steen Jorgensen tallied scores to even the count again at 12-12 with 7:02 remaining.

Reese Koburov's goal with 4:32 left gave the Yeomen a 13-12 lead, but DePauw wasted little time in drawing even again as Jorgensen scored just 15 seconds later. 

After Sutherland delivered the eventual game winner, DePauw won the ensuing faceoff, but couldn't get a shot off in time.

Ben Sherman, William Dorger and Nate Greenberg each scored three for the Tigers, while Sutherland paced Oberlin with five goals and Tom Decker added three.

Oberlin outshot the Tigers, 39-36, and each team fired 22 shots on goal. DePauw's Charlie Robson stopped eight Oberlin shots and the Yeomen's Calvin Filson recorded nine saves.

DePauw led in ground balls, 31-22, and had 16 turnovers to the guests' 20, but Oberlin won 17 of the 30 faceoffs. 

Donny Bleifuss and Joe Garvey each had five ground balls for the Tigers with Garvey winning 12 of 23 faceoffs. Bleifuss also caused three turnovers. 

Filson and Max McAllister each had five ground balls with McAllister claiming 16 of 26 faceoffs. Max Scott paced the Yeomen with three caused turnovers.
