Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw came back from a three-goal deficit early in the second half to tie the score twice, but Wittenberg scored three in the final 10:52 and held on for a 15-14 win in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools. Wittenberg moved to 6-3 overall, while DePauw is now 2-2.
DePauw's Taylor Summers struck first just 1:48 into the contest, but Wittenberg's Emily Wadds scored three times in a 4:26 stretch to grab a 3-1 lead.
The guests' lead reached four at 6-2 before Emma Flynn scored a pair sandwiching an Emilye Denny goal to cut the Wittenberg lead to 6-5.
Wittenberg held a 9-7 halftime lead after Becca Joseph scored with just three seconds left. The visiting Tigers scored just 23 seconds into the second half to push the margin to three. DePauw came right back with scores from Sydney Blake, Flynn and Nicole Gibson to tie the contest at 10-10.
Two straight scores gave Wittenberg a 12-10 advantage, but Nicole Gibson scored a pair to tie it at 12-12. After Wittenberg scored two consecutive goals, Denny trimmed the lead to 14-13 with 8:54 remaining. The teams were scoreless until Wadds made it 15-13 with 1:32 remaining. Flynn countered just 20 seconds later and the Tigers couldn't get a shot off in the final minute.
Flynn led the Tigers with four goals, while Gibson had three and Denny two. Gibson and Taylor Summers each had four assists.
Wadds paced Wittenberg with seven goals, while Joseph added three. Joseph and Gabrielle Zysik each had two assists.
Lis Hawkins stopped 16 Wittenberg shots in goal, while Mary Furlong totaled 10 saves for the guests.
Wittenberg held a 34-25 advantage in shots and a 20-11 draw control margin, while DePauw led in ground balls, 36-32.
Denny paced DePauw with 15 draw controls with Faith Meads totaling 15 for Wittenberg.
Blake led DePauw with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Wadds finished with seven ground balls and shared the team lead in caused turnovers with Gretchen Burkey as each had three.
DePauw faces Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday, March 29, at Sewanee at 1 p.m. CDT.
