DePauw Loses 5-4 to Division II Ranked GVSU

Greencastle, Ind. -- In a match-up between two ranked teams from two different divisions, DePauw ended up on the outside looking in, falling to Grand Valley State 5-4 on Saturday.

Grand Valley State, ranked 33rd in Division II, trailed for most of the match but won four singles matches to pull ahead. DePauw held a 2-1 team lead after doubles play. They later trailed 4-2 and needed to win the final three matches but only won two.

The No. 1 doubles team and No. 2 team picked up wins early. Both were close matches. Dan Rodefeld and Matt Santen won at No. 1 doubles 9-8 (7-4), and Nate Wallace and Harold Martin won 8-6.

To start singles play the 1, 4 and 6 flights fell in straight sets. At No. 3 Greg Frauenheim would later do the same, falling 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. 

DePauw's two wins came at No. 2 and No. 5. At No. 2, Santen defeated Zach Phillips in a long match 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8). Wallace fell in the same boat at No. 5, winning 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3.

The Tigers fall to 4-4 overall. They travel to Franklin College on Wednesday.
