Strong Second Half Leads DePauw to NCAC Win at Ohio Wesleyan

Delaware, Ohio - DePauw trailed by as many as three goals, but outscored host Ohio Wesleyan, 5-1, in the second half and topped the Battling Bishops by an 9-7 score at Selby Stadium.

The Tigers improved to 5-8 overall with their third straight win and into a tie for fourth in the North Coast Athletic Conference at 3-2, while Ohio Wesleyan dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Ohio Wesleyan's Patricia Ryan scored just 1:06 into the contest, but DePauw's Elizabeth McCracken evened the score just 1:42 later.

The Battling Bishops scored three straight to grab a 4-1 lead. Emma Flynn and Emilye Denny stopped the run with scores to make it 4-3, but the hosts outscored DePauw, 2-1, the remainder of the half for a 6-4 advantage at the intermission.

Denny scored just 16 seconds into the second half on Nicole Gibson's assist before Gibson added two scores to give DePauw a 7-6 lead midway through the half. Gibson added another goal to make it 8-6 with 10:36 left.

The Bishops' lone goal of the second half came from Taylor Weis with 5:26 left, but Gibson sealed the win with just 52 seconds left.

Gibson paced the Tigers with four goals, while Denny and McCracken each added two. Abby Snively paced the Tigers with two assists. Cory Kinder had three goals for Ohio Wesleyan with Ryan and Weis adding two apiece.

DePauw's Liz Hawkins and Ohio Wesleyan's Kelly Coffyn each recorded seven saves in goal.

DePauw held a 23-20 edge in shots and a 12-6 margin in draw controls including 6-1 in the second half. Taylor Summers led the Tigers with three draw controls and Haley Savoie paced the Bishops with three.

Ohio Wesleyan led in ground balls, 18-15, with Kinder totaling five. Maryclaire Heldring and Liz Hawkins each had three ground balls for the Tigers.

DePauw hosts Wooster on Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m.
