Denny's Overtime Goal Lifts DePauw to NCAC Win over Gators

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw's Emilye Denny scored on an assist from Elizabeth McCracken with 24.1 seconds left in the first overtime to lift the Tigers to a 13-12 North Coast Athletic Conference win over visiting Allegheny. The Tigers moved to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in NCAC play, while the Gators slipped to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

The Tigers started strong and got out to a 5-2 lead after Taylor Summers' goal with 14:21 left in the opening half, but Allegheny responded with four straight to gain a 6-5 advantage with 8:40 remaining. The teams headed to the break tied 7-7 after DePauw's Maryclaire Heldring scored with 34 seconds left.

The second half was tight as neither team held more than a one-goal advantage until Allegheny scored three straight in a 2:52 stretch to take its biggest lead at 12-10 with 11:07 left in regulation.

Emma Flynn brought the Tigers back with scores at 6:04 and 4:26 to force the extra session. Denny's game-winning goal came a little less than a minute after DePauw goalie Liz Hawkins stopped Jackie Morrow's attempt at ending the contest for the Gators.

Flynn led the Tigers with four goals, while Denny, Nicole Gibson, Heldring and Summers each added two. McCracken led with four assists and Gibson added three. Shelby Piper paced the Gators with five goals and added two assists.

Hawkins stopped 14 shots for DePauw, while Kaelin Clogan had nine saves for Allegheny.

Denny paced DePauw with four draw controls with Emily Scinta scooping up five ground balls. Jessie Thiessen won 12 led the Gators with 12 draw controls and Alex Zielinksi totaled six ground balls.

DePauw had 16 turnovers to Allegheny's 19 and the Gators led in draw controls, 18-9, and ground balls 26-23. The Gators also held a 32-28 edge in shots.

The Tigers return to Reavis Stadium tomorrow for a 2 p.m. contest against Concordia-Chicago.
