Box Score Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Wittenberg scored seven first-period goals including a pair in the final 20 seconds and grabbed a 17-8 North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw at Reavis Stadium. DePauw dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC, while Wittenberg improved to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Wittenberg's Zach Shy scored with 10:33 left in the first, but DePauw's Grant Skipper countered with a score nine seconds later after winning the faceoff. The visiting Tigers, however, scored the next six in the period with the final two coming in the last 20 seconds to take a 7-1 lead at the quarter break.
They extended the lead to 9-1 before DePauw later closed the gap to 11-4 on Austin MacDonald's score with 59 seconds left in the half on Andrew Wright's assist. Wittenberg's Andrew Fuss made it 12-4 at the intermission after scoring with 20 seconds left in the half.
The guests scored in the opening minute of the third before DePauw came back with the next three to end the third, trailing 13-7. Wittenberg scored three straight in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Steen Jorgensen led the Tigers with two goals, while Skipper had a team-best eight ground balls while winning 18 of the 28 faceoffs. Thomas Fuss paced Wittenberg with four goals and added two assists, while Andrew Fuss finished with three goals. Shy led with four assists in addition to his two goals. Brent Whitehead paced the effort with seven ground balls.
Connor Patterson recorded three saves in goal for DePauw, while Wittenberg's Nick Gregory had four and Aaron Blossey six as the duo split time.
DePauw won 18 of the 28 faceoffs and each team committed 19 turnovers. Wittenberg had 41 shots to DePauw's 29 and held a 31-25 advantage in ground balls.
DePauw returns to action on Saturday, April 16, when it hosts Hiram at 2 p.m.
