Box Score Greencastle, Ind. – A strong end to the first half put the Tigers in contention to win their North Coast Athletic Conference opener against Oberlin on Saturday, but their scoring in the second half slowed as the Tigers took a 13-8 loss.
Oberlin got off to a quick start with four goals in the first 10 minutes before Elizabeth McCracken put DePauw on the board with 15:13 left in the half. It was her seventh goal of the season.
After another two goals from Oberlin to put them ahead 6-1, DePauw closed the first half on a 5-1 run in the final 10 minutes. Emilye Denny scored two goals in the game, the first off a free position shot at 9:28 and another 20 seconds later off an assist from Nicole Gibson.
Denny then assisted on the next goal by Taylor Summers. Oberlin scored to make it 7-4 with 6:33 left in the first half before Emily Flynn scored off an assist from Abby Snively and Madi Lozanoski scored off a free position shot to end the half.
With momentum for the Tigers entering the half despite trailing 7-6, the Yeowomen halted that run when Grace Barlow scored on a free position shot four minutes into the half.
However, Emma Flynn scored at 18:39 to make it a one goal game again. Yet, Oberlin scored four unanswered goals in the next 10 minutes to effectively put the game away.
Maryclaire Heldring scored off an assist from McCracken at 6:48 for DePauw's final goal. Oberlin's Marissa Maxfield scored with 22 seconds left to finish the scoring for Oberlin.
Oberlin (5-3, 1-0 NCAC) outshot the Tigers 26-22 and held the ground ball advantage at 18-15. They also committed one less turnover than the Tigers at 17-16.
DePauw won 15 draw controls to Oberlin's eight. Each team took 11 free position shots. In net, Liz Hawkins made 10 saves in the loss.
DePauw drops to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC. They travel to Hiram on April 2.
