Box Score Whittier, Calif. – The DePauw men's lacrosse team could not hold on to an early 2-1 first period lead Tuesday as they fell to Whittier 18-7.
After holding the Poets to just one goal in the first 15 minutes, Whittier scored six goals in the second period, five in the third and another six in the fourth.
The two teams played evenly through the first 10 minutes until Ben Sherman put the Tigers on the scoreboard off an assist from Jack Gomez. After Whittier tied it up, Steen Jorgensen scored as time expired to put the Tigers ahead 2-1 after one period.
Whittier then scored three straight goals to go up 4-2 with 11:54 left in the second period. Yet, two goals from Lewis Andrews and another from Andrew Wright kept the Tigers in range, as they faced a 7-5 deficit at the half.
Whittier then pulled away in the second half as DePauw only got as close as three midway through the third when Nick Woerner scored off an assist from Nate Greenberg. Drew Monroe scored DePauw's final goal with 2:19 left in the game. Andrews was credited with the assist.
Joe Musto was in net for DePauw. He made 25 saves. Whitter outshot the Tigers 59-18 as the Tigers put 10 of those shots on goal.
Whitter won the faceoff battle 22-7, held the advantage in ground balls 37-20 and capitalized on one man-up opportunity.
The loss drops the Tigers to .500 on the season at 3-3. They face Elmhurst tomorrow to conclude their California spring break trip.
