Box Score Greencastle, Ind.- In its first ever meeting with Wabash, the DePauw men's lacrosse team dominated the Little Giants as the Tigers scored 17 first-half goals on their way to a 20-4 victory.
Thursday's victory improved DePauw's overall record to 5-5 and 1-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Wabash fell to 1-7 on the year and 0-3 in NCAC play.
Ryan Mauro's unassisted goal with 10:36 in the first started the Tigers' scoring frenzy. Ben Sherman connected with Andrew Wright just seven seconds later for DePauw's second goal. At the 8:27 mark, Sherman netted a goal on an assist from Nick Woerner. Woerner provided another assist on Wright's goal with 3:44 remaining in the first.
Trailing 4-0, the Little Giants scored a short-handed goal with 2:58 in the opening period to break the scoring drought.
Benton Givens found Sherman for the Tigers' fifth goal of the period with 1:16 on the clock. Wright netted the first goal of the second period on an unassisted strike with 12:39 remaining. DePauw would add 11 more goals in the period, taking a 17-2 lead into the halftime break.
Sherman, Woerner (4), Wright (3), Jack Roberts, Grant Skipper, Kyle Roberts and Mauro all scored in the second period, while Wright (3), Sherman (2) and Woerner added assists.
In the third period, Sean Coyne notched his first collegiate goal on an unassisted strike with 13:42 on the clock. Jack Gomez followed with his first collegiate goal at the 9:26 mark. Woerner closed out the Tigers' scoring, adding a goal with 1:23 left in the third on an assist from Skipper.
Joe Musto and Zach Taylor each allowed two goals in the win with Musto making two saves and Taylor stopping six. Todd Hoogland made 16 saves in a losing effort.
DePauw held a 55-16 shot advantage and collected 42 ground balls led by Skipper with 13. Skipper went 18-for-22 in faceoffs and the Tigers were successful on 16-of-17 clear attempts. The Tigers converted on 4-of-6 extra-man opportunities and forced 27 turnovers.
Wabash committed seven penalties for eight minutes of penalty time, while DePauw was charged with five penalties for 3:30 of penalty time.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday, April 4, when they host Wooster for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
