Box Score Greencastle, Ind.- Liz Hawkins made a save with 46 seconds remaining to preserve the DePauw victory by a final score of 14-13 over Ohio Wesleyan, Tuesday evening at Reavis Stadium.
The Tigers moved to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, while the Battling Bishops dropped to 4-10 on the year and 1-5 in the league.
Hawkins was the story for DePauw, as the sophomore goalie made 16 saves in the victory. Emma Flynn scored a game-high five goals, leading the Tigers' offensive attack.
DePauw jumped out to an early lead as Abigail Snively converted on a free-position shot and Maryclaire Heldring followed on an assist from Flynn, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes.
Ohio Wesleyan would battle back, scoring back-to-back goals from Haley Savoie and Taylor Weis, respectively.
Nicole Gibson netted an unassisted goal with 15:55 remaining, but the Bishops tied the contest just 22 seconds later. Flynn put the Tigers back in front with an unassisted goal at the 15:01 mark. Heldring found Taylor Summers for DePauw's fifth goal with 12:39 remaining.
Flynn would net the Tigers' final two goals of the half, matching a pair of goals from Ohio Wesleyan. Elizabeth McCracken provided an assist on the final goal of the half, sending DePauw to the half with a 7-5 advantage.
In the second half, the Bishops fought back to tie the contest at 8-8 with 21:32 on the clock. Ohio Wesleyan would take an 11-9 lead with 16:29 remaining on Sophia Love's unassisted goal.
Trailing by two, the Tigers would net three straight goals to seize a 12-11 lead. Summers scored on an assist from Gibson, while McCracken and Carey Kunz added unassisted goals.
With 4:54 left in the contest, Patricia Ryan sliced her way through the DePauw defense and scored an unassisted goal to tie the contest at 12-12.
Summers found Flynn with 3:12 remaining, putting the Tigers in front for good. Kunz added a free-position goal with 2:22 on the clock, giving DePauw some breathing room.
Kunz's late goal proved to be essential as Love tallied a goal with 1:17 remaining, drawing the Bishops within one.
Both teams registered 21 ground balls, while Ohio Wesleyan held a 36-31 shot advantage and a 16-13 edge on draw controls. DePauw was successful on 13-of-23 clears and went 3-for-4 on free-position shots.
The Tigers close out their home season Saturday, April 18, when they host Kenyon starting at 11:45 a.m.
