Box Score Greencastle, Ind.- Capital's Kara Hines scored five goals to defeat the DePauw women's lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon in the Tigers' season opener.
DePauw drops to 0-1, while the Crusaders improved to 1-0.
Capital jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the opening eight minutes. The Tigers answered with 18:38 remaining on Elizabeth McCracken's unassisted goal. Carey Kunz followed with a goal on an assist from Emily Scinta and Nicole Gibson's unassisted strike with 11:12 on the clock tied the contest at 3-3.
The Crusaders followed with three straight goals to regain the lead. Kunz answered with an unassisted goal with 3:26 left in the half, drawing the score to 6-4 at the halftime break.
In the second-half, Gibson opened the scoring, netting her second unassisted goal with 27:40 on the clock. Capital's Hines stretched the lead back to three, tallying back-to-back goals.
With 15:43 remaining Maryclaire Heldring took a pass from Scinta and fired home a shot, cutting the Tigers' deficit to just two. However, the Crusaders netted another goal with 9:21 and held on to a 9-6 lead for the remainder of the game.
Kunz and Megan Morrison collected three ground balls for DePauw, while Heldring added three draw controls. The Tigers were successful on 12-of-23 clears and committed 31 turnovers.
Maddie Wilson collected seven saves for Capital, while Liz Hawkins made nine saves in a losing effort.
DePauw is back in action Wednesday, March 4, when they host Benedictine (Ill.) starting at 6:00 p.m.
