Titans' Last Second Goal Downs DePauw

Bloomington, Ill.- Tim Smith's goal with one second remaining gave Illinois Wesleyan a 12-11 victory over the DePauw men's lacrosse team, Tuesday night in Bloomington, Ill.

With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 1-1, while Illinois Wesleyan picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-1.

The Titans jumped out to a quick lead, netting three straight goals to open the contest. Nick Woerner provided the first DePauw goal on an assist from Ben Sherman with 8:06 left in the first. Illinois Wesleyan would answer a minute later, extending their lead back to three.

Andrew Wright notched a goal on an assist from Kyle Roberts and Sherman added an unassisted goal to draw the Tigers to a 4-3 deficit. The Titans tacked on a goal 21 seconds later, but Wright answered with a goal on an assist from Woerner, making the score 5-4.

Trailing 5-4 after the first, DePauw tied the contest just 27 seconds into the second period when Jack Roberts scored on an assist from Wright. Following a Titan goal, the Tigers notched a score with 1:40 on the clock before halftime. Jack Roberts found Benton Givens who deposited a shot into the back of the net, tying the score at half.

The third period proved to be a back and forth contest. Illinois Wesleyan totaled three goals in the period, but DePauw was right there to answer every time. Sam Alkema, Givens and Ryan Mauro provided the scoring for the Tigers, while Kyle Roberts, Alkema and Sherman all added assists.

Tied 9-9, the Titans struck first in the fourth period, but DePauw answered with Alkema's goal assisted by Wright at the 10:51 mark. Over the next seven minutes the Tigers would fire seven shots, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Illinois Wesleyan took the lead with 3:09 remaining on Colin Daly's goal assisted by Smith. The Tigers battled over the next two minutes and were rewarded for their efforts as Sherman found Wright who fired home a goal with just 1:23 on the clock.

With under a minute remaining the game appeared to be destined for overtime, but Smith fired a shot that went in with just one second left, giving the Titans a 12-11 victory.

Wright led DePauw with three goals and Sherman added three assists. Grant Skipper tallied seven ground balls, going 13-25 in faceoffs. Zach Taylor made 14 saves in a losing effort.

The Tigers begin the North Coast Athletic Conference season hosting Denison Sunday, March 1, in their home opener, starting at 3:00 p.m.
