Box Score Memphis, Tenn.- The DePauw men's lacrosse team opened the 2015 regular season on a positive note, defeating Rhodes College 13-8, Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers moved to 1-0 on the year, while Rhodes dropped to 1-2 overall.
Andrew Wright netted DePauw's first goal on an assist from Jack Roberts with 12:48 left in the quarter. Rhodes would answer with three-straight goals, taking a 3-1 advantage at the 6:50 mark.
Same Alkema drew the Tigers to within one on his unassisted goal with 5:25 on the clock. The Lynx answered with a goal just seven seconds later to regain a two-goal lead.
DePauw ripped off four-straight goals as Kyle Roberts started the run with 4:32 left in the first with his unassisted goal. Benton Givens followed with an unassisted goal and Ben Sherman added a goal on an assist from Alkema with 1:48 on the clock. Roberts capped the scoring run with his second goal on an assist from Nick Woerner with 1:38 left in the first.
Ryan Fennelly would net a goal with three seconds remaining on an assist from John Wancowicz to cut the Tigers' lead to 6-5 at the end of the first. Fennelly opened the second half with two goals, putting Rhodes in front 7-6, with 10:30 remaining.
Roberts and Sherman tallied a pair of goals in the second period to seize the lead at halftime. Sherman and Wright provided assists on the goals. Eric Speer notched an unassisted goal to start the third period, extending DePauw's lead to 9-7.
Following a Lynx goal, it was Wright who found the back of the net for his third goal of the contest. Wright's goal with 7:40 remaining in the third would give the Tigers a 10-8 lead.
DePauw dominated the fourth quarter, totaling three goals, while holding Rhodes scoreless. Givens, Roberts and Woerner provided the offensive strikes and Sherman and Grant Skipper added assists.
Zach Taylor collected his first collegiate win, grabbing 10 saves, while Joe Musto added six saves in relief. Skipper was 18-for-26 in faceoffs and collected a game-high 10 ground balls. The Tigers had 44 shots to Rhodes' 33 and were 24-for-28 on clears.
Rhodes was led by Fennelly with three goals, while Thomas Matthews made 17 saves in a losing effort.
The Tigers are back in action Wednesday, February 25, when they travel to Illinois Wesleyan for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
