February 18, 2010, Louisville, Ky. — Seventh-ranked DePauw totaled 329 points and is leading the field after the first full day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Trinity is second with 306 points.
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Josh Baugh, Johnny Montgomery, Steve Klabak and John Cook opened the evening with a win in 1:22.38 which notched an NCAA "B" cut and establised an SCAC Championships record.
Robby Spichiger was second in the 500 free in 4:35.91 which also was an NCAA "B" time and broke the DePauw school record. Tom Rich was 10th in 4:52.58, while Kyle Kerrigan was 12th in 4:54.77 and Tom Lancaster in 14th in 4:57.59.
The Tigers took three of the top four places in the 200 individual medley with Matt Kukurugya set a school record in an SCAC Championships, SCAC Open and NCAA "B" time of 1:54.35. Baugh was second in 1:54.90 with Alex Troxel placing fourth in 1:56.98. Charlie Boehme placed seventh in 1:59.66 and Dylan Klossner was 12th in 1:59.70.
Cook won the 50 free for the second straight year in an NCAA "B" time of 20.66 seconds with Klabak finishing second in 21.04 seconds which also notched a "B" cut. Montgomery was fourth in 21.48 followed by Brendan Flores in seventh in 21.98 and Andrew Nash in 15th in 22.69.
DePauw's 400 medley relay of Klabak, Kukurugya, Brogan Runion and Montgomery was second in an NCAA "B" and school record time of 3:27/17. That also established an SCAC Championships and Open record.
Competition continues on Friday with prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Tigers are going after a sixth straight SCAC title.
