May 6, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - Eighth-ranked DePauw topped 12th-ranked Whitman, 8-1, and advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals for the second straight year and fourth time in school history. DePauw improved to 22-4 on the season, while the Missionaries wrapped up the season at 24-8.
DePauw faces Middlebury in a May 15 quarterfinal match at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis. Middlebury defeated Amherst 5-2 in today's third round.
The Tigers swept doubles competition as Evan Webeler (pictured) and Scott Swanson topped Phalkun Mam and Matt Solom by an 8-4 score, while Kortney Keith and Jeff Zanchelli defeated Robbie Minday and Christoph Fuchs, 8-3. Bryan Heck and Scott Sandager beat Steven Ly and Jake Cappel at the number three spot by an 8-2 score.
Cappel cut the deficit to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sandager at number five singles, but DePauw won the final five singles matches. Scott Sauer defeated Dan Wilson at number six by a 6-3, 6-4 count and Heck clinched the team win with a 6-4,6-3 victory over Solomon at number four.
Keith battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 over Ly at number two, while Swanson won over Munday at the number three spot 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Webeler closed out the match at number one singles with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Mam.
