Box Score Kenosha, Wis.- In a nailbiter of a game, the DePauw women's soccer team's late comeback fell short, resulting in its 2-1 loss to host Carthage College. The Tigers move to 1-1-1 for the season, while the Firebirds improve to 3-0.
Â
The Tigers pressured the Firebirds from the first whistle, forcing Carthage's backline to play on its heels for most of the game. Despite its ability to get into its attacking third and keep possession of the ball, DePauw struggled to put it in the back of the Redbirds' net. In the 20th minute of play, Carthage finally broke through the Tigers' midfield pressure and charged past the defensive backline to put the Redbirds up 1-0.
Â
Carthage would hold its one-goal edge over DePauw for over 40 minutes until the Tigers'
Sophia Patrey settled a pass by
Ellie Mahan inside the goalie box to knot the game at one apiece with five minutes left in the game. Both teams turned up their intensity, fighting for position and the chance to take the lead. Unfortunately for DePauw, Carthage capitalized on a deflected free kick to get deep into its attacking third and create chaos in front of the Tigers' goal, ultimately scoring the game-winning goal with just 90 seconds left in regulation. Â
Â
DePauw held a 20-9 advantage in shots and recorded a 4-1 edge over Carthage in corner kick attempts. Though the Tigers kept possession throughout the game, the Redbirds were efficient when they did possess the ball, putting six of its nine shots on goal.Â
Â
The Tigers'
Aubree Empie and
Taylor Beard split time in the net. Empie completed the evening with three saves, and Beard recorded one save, while each conceded a goal. In goal for the Redbirds was Ainsley Stallworth, who finished the night with ten saves.
