DePauw Eliminates Wittenberg; Bows out of NCAC Tournament with Loss to Wooster

Chillicothe, Ohio - DePauw opened today's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament play with a 7-2 win over Wittenberg, but fell to Wooster in an elimination game by a 5-3 count. The Tigers finished the season at 22-17, while Wooster advanced to Sunday's championship against Denison and improved to 29-13.

In the opening game against Wittenberg, DePauw took a 2-0 lead in the third as Nick Nelson led off with a double and scored on Cameron Macon's double. Kyle Callahan's grounder moved Macon to third and Danny Glimco followed with an RBI single.

Wittenberg cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third with Chase Whisner singling with two outs and Conor O'Malley delivering an RBI double. Gabe Stacy led off the Wittenberg fifth with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Jack Siefert's single scored Stacy.

The game remained tied until the seventh when Drew Straub reached on an error and moved to second on Brennan Roach's sacrifice bunt. Nelson was hit by a pitch and Macon reached on a fielder's choice that forced Straub at third. Callahan's single scored Nelson and an error on the play allowed Macon to move to third. Glimco then reached on an error that scored Macon. Brian May's single scored two and extended DePauw's lead to 6-2.

DePauw added one more in the eighth as Evan Barnes singled and stole second and Danny Sheehan reached on a fielder's choice of a sacrifice bunt that moved Barnes to third. Brennan Roach's grounder brought home Barnes with the game's final run.

May had three of DePauw's 11 hits with Macon, Glimco and Barnes each adding two. Wittenberg's Austin Morrow had three of his team's hits and Siefert added two. Wittenberg finished its season at 27-12.

Michael Vallone improved to 10-1 after relieving Joe Runnells and pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing just two hits. In 5 2/3 innings, Runnells allowed two runs on seven hits. Each struck out three without walking a batter. Nick Cunningham dropped to 2-1.

In the elimination game against Wooster, the Fighting Scots grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third as Dominic Stilliana led off with a homer, Ben Gbur singled and Ben Hines moved him to third with a base hit before stealing second. Tyler Chumita followed with an RBI grounder and Dean Brown doubled, scoring Hines.

May led off the DePauw fourth with a single and advanced to second on an error and to third on a passed ball. Straub grounded out to first allowing May to score and trimming Wooster's lead to 3-1.

The Fighting Scots got that run back in the fourth when Gbur's sacrifice fly scored Nick Pett.

Callahan doubled to lead off the DePauw fifth and Glimco walked before Sheehan singled home Callahan to make it 4-2. 

Wooster countered in the seventh with Gbur doubling and coming home on Chumita's single.

Callahan's sacrifice fly in the eighth scored Nelson and rounded out the scoring.

Nelson had three of DePauw's nine hits with Callahan adding two. Gbur had two of Wooster's seven hits.

Glimco dropped to 1-1, while Pett improved to 1-0 and Gbur collected his second save.
