Tigers Drop Opening NCAC Tournament Game to Top-Seed Denison

Box Score

Chillicothe, Ohio - Fourth-seed DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and still led, 3-1, in the third but top-seed Denison scored one in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth on the way to a 10-5 win over the Tigers in the opening game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Tigers dropped to  21-16 and face the loser of tonight's Wooster-Wittenberg game in tomorrow's 4 p.m. elimination game. Denison improved to 31-8 and advanced in the winner's bracket to take on the Wooster-Wittenberg winner tomorrow at Noon.

Cameron Macon doubled with one out in the first and Kyle Callahan followed with a two-run homer to center. That home run broke the DePauw career record of 20 held by Brian Shannon (1993-96) and tied the single-season mark of 13 by Jack Thompson and Mike Hammel in 2017. It also broke the DePauw single-season record of 46 in 2017.

Denison's Charlie Glennon led off the second with a triple and scored on Noah Leib's grounder. DePauw countered in the third as Brennan Roach led off with a double and moved to third on Nick Nelson's single. After Macon's lineout to right doubled up Nelson at first, Callahan walked and Danny Glimco followed with an RBI single.

The Big Red's Dylan Hunter singled with one out and moved to second on a passed ball and to third on Ari Fierer's single. Danny Alvarez reached on a fielder's choice that plated Hunter and trimmed DePauw's lead to 3-2.

Denison took a 5-3 lead in the fourth as Hunter drove in two with a single and Eric Colaco later scored on a wild pitch. The Big Red expanded it to 9-3 in the fifth as Josh Bohn and Owen Wilson each delivered RBI singles before Hunter and Fierer each walked with the bases loaded.

DePauw's final two runs came in the sixth on Evan Barnes' two-run homer. Denison added one more in the eighth when Daniel Spencer singled home Jake Welsch.

Macon and Glimco each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while Hunter, Fierer, Glennonand Bohn each had two of DePauw's 13 hits.

DePauw's Will Lucas dropped to 4-2 on the season, while Denison's Will McManaman improved to 3-1.
