DePauw Opens NCAC Play with Split at Wooster

Wooster, Ohio - DePauw opened North Coast Athletic Conference play at Wooster and split a doubleheader with the Fighting Scots with a 12-4 win in the opener and a 13-6 defeat in the second. The Tigers are now 8-10 and Wooster is 9-6.

DePauw jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Kyle Callahan walked before Cameron Macon reached on an error. Each moved up on a wild pitch before Danny Glimco drove in both with a double. Evan Barnes then singled with two outs to score Glimco. Cameron Allen's solo homer in the second pushed the lead to 4-0.

Wooster reached the board in the third as Ben Gbur led off with a homer to left, but the Tigers countered in the fourth with Brennan Roach's homer to left.

Callahan, Macon and Nick Nelson singled in the fifth before Barnes drove in a pair with base hit to left center. Roach made it 10-1 with a two-out, three-run homer to left center.

The hosts added three in the bottom of the fifth as Tyler Chumita delivered a sacrifice fly and Eli Westrick plated two with a single.

Brian May's run-scoring single in the seventh and Nelson's solo shot in the eighth rounded out the scoring.

Barnes had three of DePauw's 14 hits, while Macon, Nelson and Roach each had two. Westrick had two of Wooster's four hits.

Michael Vallone improved to 5-0 after striking out seven in the first five innings and Joe Runnells collected his first save by pitching four innings of hitless relief. Mitchell Reardon dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

In the nightcap, Macon hit a two-run homer in the first before Roach and Glimco had RBI singles in the second and third innings, respectively, to make it 4-0.

The Fighting Scots grabbed a 5-4 lead in the third as Chumita hit a three-run homer before Nick Pett scored on a wild pitch and Dominic Stilliana came home when Alex Gasper singled.

Wooster added three more in the sixth as Michael Thomas tripled home Jack Henderson and scored on Ben Hines' single. Chumita's single later in the frame plated Hines to make it 8-4.

Chumita's three-run homer in the eighth and Henderson's two-run single in the inning pushed the lead to 13-4 before Macon rounded out the scoring with a two-run shot in the DePauw ninth.

May had four of DePauw's 13 hits with Macon adding three and Callahan and Allen finishing with two apiece. 

Chumita had three of Wooster's 14 hits with Hines, Dane Camphausen, Silliana and Henderson finishing with two apiece.

Griffin Albright dropped to 0-2, while Westrick improved to 1-0.

DePauw travels to Denison on Wednesday, April 6, for a Noon NCAC doubleheader.
