Box Score 2 Springfield, Ohio - DePauw battled back from a six-run deficit in the opening game of its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wittenberg, but the hosts walked off with an 11-10 win before the visiting Tigers took a 4-3 win in the nightcap. DePauw moved to 11-15 overall and 4-6 in NCAC play, while Wittenberg is now 19-7 overall and 7-3 in the NCAC.
In the opener, Wittenberg took a 3-0 lead in the second before DePauw's Cameron Macon drove in Nick Nelson and Danny Sheehan with a single in the third. The hosts countered with two in the third and three in the fourth for an 8-2 lead.
Brennan Roach singled home Sheehan in the fifth before Kyle Callahan belted a three-run homer to trim the Wittenberg lead to 8-6. Wittenberg added two more in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-6.
DePauw evened the count in the top of the ninth as Kyle Boyer led off with a single and moved to third on Sheehan's double. Roach followed with a single that scored Boyer and Nelson belted a three-run homer to even the count at 10-10.
Ian Ash led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and Tarrus Garrett entered as a pinch-runner. Garrett stole second and moved to third on an error on the play. The Tigers intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases and Parker Gryskevic delivered a two-out walk-off single up the middle.
Sheehan led DePauw with three of its 12 hits, while Nelson, Macon and Roach each had two. Jack Siefert paced Wittenberg with two of its nine hits.
EJ White dropped to 0-2 with the loss and Justin Maynard improved to 7-0.
In the nightcap, the Tigers scored two each in the second as Sheehan's sacrifice fly scored Evan Barnes and Danny Glimco came home when Roach reached on an error. They added two more in the fifth on Glimco's RBI single and Boyer's sacrifice fly that brought home Barnes.
DePauw starter Will Lucas took a no-hitter into the fifth before Gryskevic hit a two-out single. Chase Whisner's double in the eighth scored Lane Johnson and ended Lucas' shutout. Wittenberg added a second run in the frame on a bases-loaded walk, but the Tigers turned a double play to end the inning.
In the ninth Gryskevic reached on an error and advanced to second on the play before moving to third on Mason Davis' single. Gryskevic scored on a throwing error as pinch-runner Maxwell Monachino stole second. An attempted squeeze play was unsuccessful when DePauw retired Monachino at the plate for the second out and a fly out ended the game.
Brian May had three of DePauw's eight hits with Glimco adding two. Four different Wittenberg players collected one hit each.
Lucas improved to 3-1 and White earned his second save. Michael Osmond dropped to 0-1.
DePauw returns to action on Saturday, April 23, when is hosts Hiram in a Noon NCAC doubleheader.
