Box Score 2 Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw dropped to 10-14 overall and 3-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference after dropping both ends of a doubleheader with first-place Kenyon by scores of 12-1 (5 inn.) and 4-3. The Lords improved to 19-6 overall and 8-0 in the conference.
In the opener, the teams battled through four scoreless innings before Kenyon's Malcolm Gaynor reached on a fielder's choice that forced Alex Hoskins who had singled. Gaynor stole second and then scored when Nate Rosen homered to right. The game was then delayed 30 minutes as DePauw right fielder was injured on the play and left the field in an ambulance.
The Lords then blew the game open with a 10-run sixth which included a three-run double by Gaynor and a two-run single by Alex Gow.
DePauw's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth as Brian May tripled with one out and scored on Danny Sheehan's grounder.
Cameron Macon, Kyle Callahan and May each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Gaynor and Gow each had three of Kenyon's 11 hits. Drew Robinson and Hoskins added two hits each.
Michael Vallone took the loss and dropped to 6-1, while Gow moved to 6-0 after striking out nine in the seven-inning, complete game.
In game two, Kenyon scored a pair of unearned runs in the second before DePauw knotted the score in the fourth. Callahan led off with a double and scored on May's double. Wilson Graves then singled home May.
Hoskins led off the Kenyon fifth with a homer to right to give Kenyon a 3-2 advantage and the Lords stretched it to 4-2 in the eighth as Luke Meister led off with a triple and scored when Will Sturgeon hit a grounder to second against a drawn-in infield and Meister beat the throw to the plate.
Callahan, Danny Glimco and May each walked to start the DePauw eighth before Danny Sheehan was hit by a pitch with two outs to score Callahan. A strikeout ended the threat.
The Tigers had runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game.
May had two of the Tigers' five hits with Meister totaling three of Kenyon's six hits.
Joe Runnells dropped to 0-3 after allowing one earned run and striking out six in 6 2/3 innings, while Frank Lynch improved to 4-0. Joel Biery recorded his fifth save after striking out five in two innings.
DePauw travels to Wittenberg on Tuesday, April 19 for a Noon NCAC doubleheader.
