Box Score 2 Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw opened the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a doubleheader against Franklin and the Tigers dropped the first game, 16-14, before coming back for an 11-2 win in the nightcap which was suspended in the seventh due to darkness. DePauw moved to 5-5, while the Grizzlies are now 10-4.
In the opener, Franklin grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first and the Tigers responded with two each in the first and second innings for a 4-3 lead. That lead was short-lived as the Grizzlies sent 15 batters to the plate in the third and scored 12 with Sean Sullivan capping the scoring off with a grand slam.
DePauw cut into the lead with three in the third and one in the fourth before each team tallied one in the sixth to make it 16-9. Brian May clubbed a three-run homer in the seventh and the Tigers added two more in the eighth including a leadoff homer by Nick Nelson. DePauw had the potential go-ahead run at the plate in the eighth, but Alex Reinoehl took the mound for the Grizzlies and recorded the game's last four outs.
Each team totaled 12 hits with Cameron Allen leading the Tigers with five in addition to five RBI. Danny Sheehan added two hits. Tysen Lipscomb, Logan Demkovich, Noah Wood, Sullivan and Colby Reed each had two hits for Franklin.
joe Runnells dropped to 0-2 with the loss, while Mitch Merica improved to 1-1 and Reinoehl collected his second save.
In game two, DePauw scored all it needed in the first as five runners crossed the plate. Kyle Callahan had an RBI double and Nelson slammed a three-run homer to straightaway center. The Tigers scored five more in the fourth as Allen had a run-scoring double before Cameron Macon drove in two with a bases-loaded double and another run scored on an error on the play.
The Grizzlies plated two in the sixth and DePauw added its final run in the bottom of the sixth on Sheehan's RBI single.
DePauw finished with nine hits with Allen leading with three to finish the doubleheader with an 8-for-10 performance at the plate. Four different Grizzlies collected one hit each.
Michael Vallone moved to 4-0 after allowing just three hits in five innings while striking out 13 of a possible 15 outs. Jackson Young dropped to 3-1.
DePauw travels to Rose-Hulman tomorrow for a 6:30 p.m. single game.
