Box Score 2 Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw opened North Coast Athletic Conference West Division play with a doubleheader split against visiting Wabash. The Little Giants won the opener, 5-2, and the Tigers took the nightcap, 5-3. Both teams are 8-8 overall and 1-1 in NCAC West play.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Kyle Callahan and Trey Shaw each singled with two outs and Cameron Macon plated Callahan with a single. Nick Nelson followed with a base hit that brought home Shaw and gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Wabash cut the lead in half in the fourth as Austin Simmers drew a leadoff walk and stole second. He came home when Andrew Jumonville laid down a bunt single to third and the throw was wide of first.
In the fifth, Sean Smith was hit by a pitch with two outs before Cameron Martin and Simmers singled to load the bases. Jumonville followed with a bases-clearing double to give Wabash a 4-2 lead. The Little Giants added an insurance run in the seventh as Simmers singled home Martin.
Callahan and Macon each had two of DePauw's six hits, while Jumonville had two of Wabash's four hits.
Kase Lawson improved to 3-2 for Wabash, while Joe Runnells dropped to 2-3.
Wabash gained the early lead in game two as Simmers reached on an error and later scored on Cole Vassilo's sacrifice fly.
DePauw took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning as Shaw singled with one out and Cameron Macon followed with a triple before scoring on Nelson's double. The Tigers extended the lead in the second as Danny Sheehan led off with a double and later scored on Shaw's single.
The Little Giants trimmed the lead in the third when Simmers singled, stole second and third and came home on Jumonville's sacrifice fly.
Charlie Patrick's solo homer in the fifth made it 4-2 and Jack Lee's sacrifice fly in the sixth scored Sheehan who led off the frame with a double.
Shaw and Sheehan each had two of DePauw's seven hits, while Simmers had two of Wabash's three.
Michael Vallone improved to 1-1 and struck out 11 in seven innings, while Dylan Scheid dropped to 2-1.
The two teams square off in Crawfordsville tomorrow in a Noon NCAC West doubleheader.
