Tigers Fall to Little Giants

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw led early in both games of its non-conference doubleheader with visiting Wabash, but the Little Giants came away with the sweep by scores of 4-3 and 11-6. DePauw dropped to 10-14 on the season, while Wabash is now 16-12.

In the opener, DePauw took a 2-0 lead in the second on Trey Shaw's two-run, two-out single which scored Nick Nelson and Kyle Boyer. Wabash countered with one in the third as Andrew Jumonville singled home Austin Simmers. The Tigers got out of a bases loaded jam with a fielder's choice that forced an out at the plate before a fly out ended the threat. Noah Luebbehusen led off the fourth with a single and Kamden Earley followed with a two-run homer to right.

DePauw evened the score at 3-3 in the fifth when Cameron Macon doubled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Little Giants scored the game winner in the sixth as Felix Valero was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Simmers' double and scored on Jumonville's sacrifice fly.

Shaw had three of DePauw's eight hits and Macon added two. Simmers and Cole Vassilo each had two of Wabash's seven hits.

Tyler Dearing improved to 3-3 with the complete game win, while EJ White dropped to 2-1.

In the second game, Wabash grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first as Matthew Annee scored on a wild pitch and Jumonville came home on Vassilo's grounder.

DePauw answered in the bottom of the frame as Shaw led off with a single and scored on Kyle Callahan's double. Nelson doubled to score Callahan and Macon and give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

The Little Giants regained the advantage in the third on Canton Terry's two-run single and Cameron Martin's run-scoring base hit. The lead reached 9-3 as Wabash scored four in the fourth.

The Tigers got two of those runs back in the fifth as Callahan hit a solo homer before Macon tripled and scored on Boyer's bases loaded walk.

Wabash scored two more in the sixth on Annee's two-run double and DePauw wrapped up the scoring in the seventh as Jack Lee singled home Nelson.

Callahan had two of the Tigers' seven hits, while Terry had four of Wabash's 16 hits with Martin adding three.

Sam Phillips improved to 1-0, while Nathan Fackel dropped to 0-2.

The Tigers host Denison at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 22.
