Tigers Open Home Season with Win over Panthers

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and held the lead on the way to a 4-1 win over visiting Greenville in the Tigers' home opener at Walker Field. DePauw moved to 2-1, while the Panthers dropped to 0-4.

Danny Sheehan led off the DePauw half of the first with a walk and moved to second on Trey Shaw's grounder to second. Sheehan moved to third on a failed pick off attempt and came home on Kyle Callahan's triple to right center. After Charlie Patrick was hit by a pitch, Nick Nelson reached on a fielder's choice on a ball hit to the outfield that allowed Callahan to score.

Greenville cut the lead in half in the fourth as Drew Frey and Brock Timmermann drew walks and later advanced on steals. After Noah Casali drew a two-out walk, Frey scored on a wild pitch.

DePauw countered in the bottom of the fourth as Evan Barnes led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error on the play. Barnes moved to third on Blane Cook's sacrifice bunt and scored when Shaw reached on an error. The Tigers added another run in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Patrick and Nelson.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the seventh and ninth innings but the Tigers got out of both jams.

Patrick had two of DePauw's 10 hits as nine different Tigers collected hits. Five different Panthers had one hit apiece.

Danny Glimco moved to 1-0 with three innings of hitless and scoreless relief that included six strikeouts. Hayden Poston notched his first save after getting the final two outs of the game. Jaxen Gibson dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

The two teams meet at Greenville tomorrow in a Noon CST doubleheader.
