Box Score 2 Westfield, Ind. - DePauw posted a pair of six-run innings in its nightcap against Wabash on the way to a 17-5 win and a doubleheader split at Grand Park. The Little Giants rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener which was the season's first game for both squads.
The Tigers' six-run first started with two outs when Kyle Callahan singled, Charlie Patrick was hit by a pitch and Evan Barnes walked to load the bases. Trey Shaw delivered a two-run double before Barnes scored on a wild pitch and TJ Carney-DeBord reached on an error that allowed Shaw to score. Cameron Macon's single plated Carney-DeBord and Evan Bohrer doubled home Macon.
In the second Barnes drove in Callahan with a sacrifice fly and Patrick scored when Shaw reached on a throwing error of his sacrifice bunt.
Nelson's inside-the-park homer in the fourth made it 9-0 before Wabash countered with four in the fifth. The Tigers then put the game out of reach with six runs in the sixth highlighted by RBI doubles from Nelson, Callahan and Evan Bohrer, a two-run single by Carney-DeBord and Danny Sheehan's sacrifice fly. After Wabash scored once in the sixth the Tigers added two more in the seventh and wrapped up the run-rule win.
Callahan had five of DePauw's 15 hits, while Nelson, Shaw and Macon each had two. Austin Simmers and Cole Vassilo each had two of Wabash's six hits. EJ White collected the win in relief of Michael Vallone, while Derek Haslett suffered the loss.
In the opener, Sheehan led off the game and the season with a solo homer to left before Nick Nelson made it 3-0 with a two-run single in the sixth.
Wabash started its comeback in the bottom of the sixth as Canton Terry doubled home a pair and Felix Valero knotted the score at 3-3 with a triple.
Cameron Martin and Simmers led off the Wabash seventh with walks and Martin scored the game-winning run on an error on Sean Smith's sacrifice bunt.
Nelson had two of DePauw's four hits, while Simmers had two of Wabash's seven. Hayden Poston suffered the loss in relief of Joe Runnells who struck out seven and allowed four hits over five innings. Dylan Schneid picked up the relief win for the Little Giants.
DePauw hosts Greenville on Friday, March 5, in a 3 p.m. game at Walker Field.
