Tigers Open Season with Doubleheader Loss at Emory

Atlanta, Ga. - After dropping the first game of a doubleheader by an 11-1 score at Emory, DePauw got out to a 7-1 lead in the nightcap only to fall by a 12-9 score in the season-opening games. The Eagles improved to 5-1 with the sweep.

In the opener, the teams battled through three scoreless innings before Emory plated five in the fourth and four in the sixth. The Tigers got on the board in the seventh when Evan Barnes led off with a single and scored on Nick Nelson's double to left center. The Eagles rounded out the scoring with two in the eighth.

Barnes, Nelson and Cameron Allen each had two of DePauw's eight hits. Richard Brereton had four of Emory's 14 hits with Michael Edelman and Caleb Shulman each totaling two.

Nick Casey suffered the loss on the mound for the Tigers with Jack Brodsky picking up the win.

Emory got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two with a pair of doubles, but DePauw took the lead in third as Jackson Williams and Jack Fitzgerald led off with singles and advanced a base on Allen's sacrifice bunt. Danny Sheehan walked to load the bases and Kyle Callahan delivered a two-run single.

The Tigers made it 7-1 in the fourth when Sheehan reached on an error with the bases loaded which scored Jack Omstead before Callahan and Barnes each brought home two with singles.

The Eagles responded with seven in the bottom of the frame as they sent 12 batters to the plate and collected six hits.

DePauw regained the lead in the fifth when Williams scored on a wild pitch and Fitzgerald scored on Callahan's single to make it 9-8. That lead held until the the bottom of the sixth when Shulman drove in two with a double to give the hosts a 10-9 lead. Emory added two more in the seventh. 

The Tigers loaded the bases in the seventh but Aaron Mishouland took the mound for Emory to get the last out before retiring the side in order in each of the last two innings.

Callahan had three of DePauw's 12 hits and drove in five, while Barnes, Williams and Fitzgerald each had two hits. Emory totaled 12 hits with Edelman leading with three followed by Brereton, Shulman and Ryan Adelman with two each. 

Dylan Kahn picked up the win and Michoulam the save, while Nathan Fackel suffered the loss in relief.

DePauw travels to Oglethorpe tomorrow for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
