Tigers Split with Wittenberg to open NCAC Play

Springfield, Ohio -- The DePauw baseball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday and split with Wittenberg, losing game one 9-6 and winning game two 9-4.

In their game two win, Andrew Quinn improved to 2-1 after pitching 6.1 innings of two-run baseball.

Quinn held Wittenberg scoreless through the first five innings as DePauw ammounted a 6-0 lead. Jack Thompson and Mike Hammel hit separate solo home runs in the fourth, and Elliot Shebek hit a two-run single in the fifth.

Shebek finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Thompson, Ryan Grippo and Reid Pittard each finished with a pair of hits. Hammel finished 3-for-5 and added a double to go along with his home run.

Aaron Miller and Nick Casey both pitched 1.1 innings to close out the game for the Tigers.

In their 9-6 game one loss, Hammel started and took the loss, getting tallied for five earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Tom Giella relieved him, pitching one inning and giving up two earned runs. Brayden White finished it off for DePauw with 2.1 innings of relief and one earned run.

Grippo homered for the Tigers and finished 2-for-5. Collin Einertson won 3-for-4. Pittard and Tate Stewart each collected two hits.

The Tigers scored two in the top of the ninth but the deficit was too large for them to come back.

DePauw moves to 17-5 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC. Wittenberg is now 8-11 and 3-3 in the conference. The two teams finish their series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
