Tigers Split Final Two with Denison; Take 3-of-4 in Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Greencastle, Ind. – DePauw's bats gave them a series win but their pitching prevented a series sweep as the Tigers defeated Denison 15-5 in seven innings in game one and fell 14-12 in game two.

After taking 3-of-4 against the Big Red, the Tigers sit atop the North Coast Athletic West Division at 6-2 and 23-6 overall. Denison is second at 5-3 and 19-6 overall.

DePauw won game one after tallying 14 hits and run-ruling the Big Red after getting six runs in the bottom of the seventh, all of which came with just one out in the inning.

Jack Thompson, Mike Hammel and Max Cohen all homered in the game. Hammel's home run was his 11th of the season, which tied the DePauw single season home run record.

Reid Pittard finished with a game-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored.

Thompson, Hammel and Tate Stewart each had two hits. Thompson finished with a team-high four RBI. Hammel and Collin Einertson each added a pair.

Riley Futterknecht improved to 4-1. He pitched 5.1 innings and gave up three earned runs. Tom Giella and Nick Casey finished out the game.

In game two, Denison got to the Tigers early, taking an 8-0 lead through two-and-a-half. However, DePauw got right back in it with a 5-spot in the bottom of the third.

Pittard, Thompson and Mike Hammel all collected RBI singles in the inning. Einertson recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice and Stewart had a sacrifice fly.

Denison responded with another four run inning in the fourth, but DePauw put up four runs of their own in the fifth. Denison added another run in the sixth, but DePauw once again answered, in part by a two-run home run from Elliot Shebek, scoring three and cutting the deficit to 13-12.

Yet, the offense died down from there. Denison added one more run in the eighth, while DePauw failed to score again for the remainder of the game.

DePauw used six different pitchers but could not stop Denison's offense. Danny Farrar started and took the loss in 1.1 innings of work, giving up four earned runs.

Stewart finished 3-for-4 in the game with a double, three RBI and two runs. Shebek finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Grippo, Thompson and Hammel each had two hits.

The Tigers will remain at home for their next series starting with a double header Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan.
