Tigers Punch Ticket Into NCAC Tourney

Box Score

Meadville, Pa. – The DePauw baseball team left little doubt about continuing their season on Sunday with a 16-5 win over Allegheny, earning the Tigers two of the three wins in the North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover Series and placing them in the NCAC Tournament.

DePauw (23-17, 10-9) split the two games with Allegheny (21-14, 11-6) on Saturday. The first with a lopsided 9-0 loss, and the second with a 5-3 win to keep their NCAC Tournament hopes alive.

They came back on Saturday with a devastating offense, which tallied 16 runs on 15 hits. They broke out of the gate early with a three-run first inning and kept piling the runs on throughout the game. A four-run fourth inning made it 8-2, before a monstrous seven-run seventh put the game out of reach for the Gators.

Three different Tigers collected four RBI – Jack Thompson, Lucas Italiano and Connor Einertson.

Einertson collected a team and game high three hits, going 3-for-5 with a home run. Not to be outdone by his brother, Collin Einertson connected on a home run of his home as he went 2-for-6 with 2 RBI in the game. Both home runs came in the seventh inning.

Connor put DePauw on the board in the first with a two-out, two-run double to center field. Collin made it a 3-0 game with a single to center field, scoring Connor.

Thompson was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple to his name. His bases clearing triple in the fourth on a full count made it a 7-2 game.

Italiano was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks. He cleared the bases with his double in the seventh, scoring three and widening DePauw's lead to nine.

Elsewhere, Ryan Grippo was 2-for-5 with an RBI, Rick Okazaki went 2-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored and Tate Stewart added an RBI and two runs scored in a 1-for-5 performance.

On the mound, Mike Hammel (7-2) recorded his seventh win on the year in 5.2 innings of relief. He gave up two runs on five hits and struck out six.

Andrew Quinn started the game but lasted just 2.1 innings, in which he gave up three earned runs on four hits. Nick Horvath pitched a scoreless ninth to close the game.

The Tigers open the NCAC Tournament against Denison at 8 p.m. Thursday in Chillicothe, Ohio.
