Tigers Split Opening Games against WashU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Louis, Mo. – The DePauw baseball team split a pair of games with Washington University on Friday, winning the first game 5-1 but falling in game two 9-5.

The loss broke a seven-game win streak for the Tigers, who now stand at 19-16 overall on the year. Washington moves to 28-14.

DePauw scored four in the top of the ninth to steal a game one victory. A hit batter and a walk put runners on first and second to start the inning. After Ryan Grippo popped out, Zack Wade singled up the middle to score Max Cohen. Later in the inning, Lucas Italiano hit a 3-run double to right center.

It was enough run support to give Wyatt Spector (3-4) the win, who went 8.2 innings and allowed just one run on six hits. Jack Dillon came in to record the final out.

Italiano finished with two hits, as did Wade, Tate Stewart and Collin Einertson. The Tigers totaled 10 hits in the game.

In game two, Washington broke up a 1-1 tie in the third with three runs and followed that up with a five-run fifth. DePauw again scored four in the top of the ninth but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Riley Futterknecht (5-2) took the loss. He was hit often and hard, giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits. Sam Comer pitched two innings of one-run baseball in relief, while Tyler Holt and Nick Horvath each pitched a scoreless inning.

Italiano had another strong game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Connor Einertson also had a three hit game, while recording one RBI and scoring two runs.

Max Cohen had a double and a walk, which netted him three RBI. Jack Thompson finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.

The two teams will meet again Sunday in another doubleheader.
