Box Score 2 The DePauw baseball team forced two extra inning games on Saturday but fell on the short end of each, falling in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener against Wittenberg.
In game one, DePauw lost 4-3 in nine innings. Wittenberg's Dalton Boucher homered in the top of the ninth in what would be the game-deciding run. He hit it off Nick Horvath in his second inning of work, who took the decision and falls to 0-2 on the year.
Wyatt Spector made the start and pitched seven innings of four-hit, three run baseball.
DePauw scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. Tate Stewart drove home the team's first run before Connor Einertson brought him home on a home run to right field.
Stewart finished 2-for-3 in the game, and Ryan Grippo was 2-for-4.
In game two, the two teams played to a tight contest again before Wittenberg opened up with a 12-run ninth inning that sent DePauw to a 17-5 loss.
Wittenberg tried to end the game in the eighth with a run but DePauw fought back in the bottom of the eighth to tie it up. With two quick outs to start, Rick Okazaki walked to extend the inning. On the next pitch, Grippo hit a triple to bring Okazaki home and to tie the game.
Unfortunately, Jack Dillon could not hold the lead in the ninth and took his second loss on the season. Dillon, Danny Farrar and Matt Emerick all pitched in Wittenberg's 12-run ninth.
Connor Einertson was 2-for-4 with one RBI in the game, while Collin Einertson was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Jordan Hitt took the win on the mound for Wittenberg. He pitched a complete game and improves to 3-0 on the year.
Riley Futterknecht started for DePauw and pitched seven innings, giving up one earned run in the no-decision.
The two teams return to action Sunday when they face off in two more games. Wittenberg enters at 6-8 and 2-0 in the NCAC, and DePauw enters at 9-9 and 0-2 in the NCAC.
