DePauw Rallies for Doubleheader Split at Ohio Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Delaware, Ohio - DePauw's scoring struggles continued, but the Tigers split a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan. The Battling Bishops won the first game, 6-0, and DePauw took the nightcap by a 3-2 count. DePauw is now 12-14 overall and 3-7 in the NCAC, while Ohio Wesleyan is 16-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

In the opener, Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the second as Devin Van Winkle led off with a walk and moved to third on Colin Stolly's double. Steven Moore's sacrifice fly plated Van Winkle and Stolly scored on Tyler Flaherty's single.

Justin Dages led off the third with a double and scored on C.J. Tosino's double to make it 3-0 before Van Winkle knocked in a pair in the fifth with a single and Stolly drove home Van Winkle with a base hit.

Two DePauw baserunners reached third and three made it to second, but the Tigers couldn't drive them home.

Six different DePauw players had one hit each, while Dages, Tosino and Stolly each had two for the Bishops.

Wyatt Spector dropped to 2-4 with the loss, while Pete Munger improved to 5-1 with the complete game shutout.

In game two, DePauw jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first as Max Cohen singled home Lucas Italiano. The Tigers extended the lead to 2-0 in the second as Ryan Grippo singled, moved to second on an error, to third on Rick Okazaki's sacrifice and scoring on Reid Pittard's grounder.

Ohio Wesleyan evened the score in the third as Dages tripled and scored on Aaron Caputo's grounder. Van Winkle later singled and came home on Stolly's double.

The deciding run crossed for the Tigers in the fourth as Okazaki singled with two outs, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on Pittard's base hit. Jack Thompson then singled home Okazaki giving the Tigers a 3-2 advantage.

The Bishops threatened in both the seventh and eighth innings, but DePauw double plays ended the innings both times.

Thompson, Cohen and Grippo each had two of DePauw's 11 hits, while Flaherty had three of Ohio Wesleyan's 12 hits with Tosino and Van Winkle each adding a pair.

Riley Futterknecht improved to 4-1 and struck out seven in eight innings, while Nick Horvath collected his fourth save. Kevin Zullo dropped to 0-3 for the Bishops.

The teams wrap up the four-game series with tomorrow's Noon doubleheader.
