Tucson, Ariz. – The DePauw baseball team opened its spring break trip Sunday splitting with Carleton College, losing game one 5-3 in eight innings and opening up game two with a 10-3 victory.

In game one, DePauw extended the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth before Carleton scored two in the top of the eighth to eventually take the win.

Tate Stewart and Mike Hammel each recorded a sacrifice fly, while an error in the field gave DePauw its third run. The Tigers totaled nine hits to Carleton's 12.

Jack Thompson, Collin Einertson and Ryan Grippo each recorded two hits. Thompson, Stewart and Reid Pittard all crossed the plate once. Einertson had the team's only extra base hit with a triple.

Nick Horvath took the loss after pitching the seventh and eighth innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits. It was his first loss of the season.

Wyatt Spector gave the Tigers a quality start with six innings and allowing just two earned runs. He walked two batters and struck out four.

In game two, the Tigers' offense came alive with 10 runs on 12 hits and set the tone with a five-run second inning. At the top of the lineup, Pittard went 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and one walk to push his average to .275 on the season.

The first four batters in the lineup combined to go 7-for-15 (.467) with nine of the team's 10 RBI.

Jack Thompson went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Lucas Italiano doubled to go 1-for-4 with two RBI and Hammel went 2-for-3. Rick Okazaki recorded the team's final RBI with a single. He walked in his other at bat to finish 1-for-1 in the game.

Connor Einertson also went 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk.

Riley Futterknecht improved to 2-0 after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just one earned run. Danny Farrar pitched to two batters and struck out both to close the sixth before Grant Rademacher pitched the final inning and allowed one earned run.

The Tigers are now 6-5 on the season and continue play in Arizona on Monday against Luther.
