Spector's Gem Helps Tigers Earn Saturday Split Against Oberlin

Greencastle, Ind.- Despite a 15-7 setback in game one, the DePauw University baseball team bounced back to earn a Saturday split against Oberlin College, winning game two by a final score of 9-0. The two teams will meet tomorrow at noon with the winner advancing to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the first on hits from Reid Pittard, Ryan Allee, Mike Hammel and Cory Meixner to grab an early lead. Hammel and Meixner each recorded two RBI in the inning.

Oberlin took the lead after scoring five runs in the top half of the fourth highlighted by Mitch Novak's double down the right field line that plated two Yeomen. In the top of the fifth, Andrew Hutson singled to third and scored on Danny Baldocchi's double to right center. Novak hit a screaming line drive to right center that barely evaded Collin Henry's diving attempt. The ball rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Novak to scamper home for an inside the park home run.

Trailing 8-4, DePauw battled back in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs. Lucas Italiano singled to right and Allee followed with a single through the left side. Connor Einertson walked to load the bases and Hammel reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Italiano and Allee to score due to an error on the play. Henry added an RBI single to third, drawing the score to 8-7.

The Yeomen took control of the contest in the top of the seventh when they tallied five runs in the frame. Blaise Dolcemaschio had the devastating blow, depositing a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam. Oberlin added two runs in the top of the ninth to round out the game's scoring. John Evans delivered a two RBI single up the middle, plating Jeff Schweighoffer and Dolcemaschio.

Kyle Dominy moved to 5-1 with the win, tossing a complete game with 10 hits, seven runs (five earned), three strikeouts and four walks.

Jack Peck took the loss, going 6.1 innings with 11 hits, 12 runs, four strikeouts and four walks. Nick McCreary and Sam Comer combined for 2.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs on six hits.

In game two, DePauw starter Wyatt Spector dominated the Oberlin offense, holding them to just five hits over eight innings. The junior lefty tallied four strikeouts and just two walks over eight scoreless innings.

Tate Stewart broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth as he deposited an 0-1 offering over the left field fence. Matt Dorsett singled to left center and moved to second on Reid Pittard's bunt single to third. Henry hit an RBI single through the right side and Italiano followed with a sacrifice fly, giving DePauw a 3-0 advantage.

Einertson singled up the middle to start the sixth and scored on Meixner's RBI double to left. Meixner would advance to third on a wild pitch and score on Ryan Grippo's sacrifice fly to right.

DePauw would seal the victory with four runs in the bottom half of the eighth. Einertson hit a triple to open the frame and scored on Hammel's RBI single down the left field line. Meixner followed with a towering homer to left field that cleared the scoreboard. Henry delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Stewart for the game's final run.

Spector moved to 3-4 with the win, while Nick Horvath closed out the contest tossing a scoreless ninth.

Sean Kiley dropped to 4-3, going six innings with nine hits and five earned runs.

A plethora of Tigers collected multiple hits on the day led by Henry who had four hits and three RBI. Pittard, Allee, Einertson and Meixner all added three hits for DePauw.
