Tigers Win Nightcap; Earn Doubleheader and Series Split with Denison

Greencastle, Ind. - Cory Meixner's single to left in the bottom of the eighth of game two scored pinch-runner Ryan Raupach and lifted DePauw to a 10-9 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the visiting Big Red and a doubleheader and series split. Denison took the opener by an 8-6 score.

DePauw moved to 7-13 overall and 4-2 in NCAC West Division play, while the Big Red are now 9-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

In the nightcap, DePauw trailed 2-0 before scoring six in the third. Reid Pittard's grounder and Ryan Grippo's run-scoring single tied the contest at two before Connor Einertson delivered a three-run double and then scored on Collin Henry's single.

Denison evened the score at 6-6 with two each in the fourth and fifth frames before the Tigers tacked on two more in the fifth. Einertson's triple scored Lucas Italiano and Henry's single brought home Einertson.

Each team scored once in the seventh before the Big Red knotted the score at 9-9 with two runs with two outs in the eighth. Charlie Apfelbach's two-run single scored Georgie Montes and Evan Flax and evened the score.

Ryan Allee singled to right with one out in the bottom of the eighth and Ryan Raupach entered as a pinch-runner. Einertson moved Raupach to second with a single up the middle before Meixner sent a base hit to left to score Raupach with the evnetual game winner.

Denison loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Nick Horvath struck out Flax to end the game.

DePauw totaled 12 hits led by Einertson's three and two each from Reid Pittard and Henry. Einertson drove in four in the win. Flax and Apfelbach had two hits each for Denison which totaled 11 as a team.

Horvath picked up the win and improved to 3-0 after allowing two hits and striking out three in 1 1/3 innings. Perley Horvath dropped to 1-2 with the loss.

In the opener, Denison took advantage of a pair of DePauw errors in the second inning and scored five unearned runs. Einertson got two of those back in the bottom half of the second with a two-run homer after Mike Hammel singled. The Tigers committed two more miscues in the third and the Big Red scored one to push the lead to 6-2. 

Grippo's third-inning grounder scored Joey Plesac who led off the inning with a double, but Denison added two more in the fourth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Flax and Ryan Mulligan. 

Meixner's pinch-hit homer in the fifth and Italiano's two-run shot later in the inning brought the Tigers to within 8-6, but DePauw placed just one runner into scoring position in the final two innings.

DePauw totaled eight hits with Hammel leading with two. Einertson finished with four hits and six RBI on the day and hit for the cycle between the two games. Flax, Apfelbach and Jack Blanchard each had two of Denison's nine hits. 

Tigers' starter Jack Peck suffered the loss and dropped to 1-3 after allowing just two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Andrew Quinn, Eric Steele and Nick McCreary combined to pitch the final 3 1/3 innings of two-hit, scoreless ball.

Denison's Johnny Funkhouser picked up the win and improved to 3-0, while Mulligan notched his third save.

DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, April 8, when it travels to Wittenberg for a doubleheader that was previously postponed.
