Box Score 2 Greencastle, Ind.- Following a rained-soaked Saturday, the Tigers were back in action taking on Washington (Mo.) and Case Western, Sunday afternoon at Walker Field. DePauw dropped a pair of one-run contests, falling to the Bears 2-1 and dropping the nightcap to the Spartans by a 5-4 margin.
Against Wash U., the Tigers were locked in a pitcher's duel as Wyatt Spector was matched against Max Zhang. The Bears struck first, as Brandon Deger hit a one-out double to left center. Deger stole third and scored on an errant throw from catcher Matt Dorsett.
DePauw would answer in the bottom half of the frame starting with Connor Einertson's single through the left side. Einertson moved to second on Jack Thompson's ground out and went to third on Collin Henry's two-out single to left. Tate Stewart delivered a single to center, tying the contest at 1-1.
Neither squad was able to muster any offense over the next five innings. In the top of the eighth, CJ Price hit a lead-off double to right field and moved to third on Deger's sacrifice bunt. With the infield in, Kyle Kozak hit a grounder up the middle, forcing short stop Reid Pittard to make the play at first base. On the ground out Price was able to scamper home, giving the Bears the lead.
Zhang took care of business in the eighth and ninth innings, securing the complete-game victory. The senior moved to 4-2 on the year, allowing eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Spector took the loss, falling to 2-4 on the year after going seven plus innings with five strikeouts, four walks and nine hits allowed. Nick McCreary worked two innings in relief, notching one strikeout and no earned runs.
In the nightcap against Case, the Spartans grabbed an early lead on Aaron Cain's RBI single to right in the top of the first.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the second as Einertson drew a walk to start the inning and moved to third on Thompson's single to right. Following a strikeout, Henry singled through the right side to tie the contest.
Case came right back in the top half of the third, scoring two runs on four consecutive singles. Andrew Gronski, Kerrigan Cain, Jordan Swisher and Robert Winemiller all tallied singles in the inning with Swisher and Winemiller collecting RBIs.
Josh Neal reached on a two-out error in the top of the fourth. The Tigers appeared to have Neal picked off, but he was ruled safe and promptly stole second. Again, DePauw appeared to be out of the inning as Mike Hammel struck out Gronski. However, the pitch bounced away from Ryan Allee and Gronski was able to reach first. Kerrigan Cain singled to right, plating Neal and giving the Spartans a 4-1 lead.
Einertson hit a line drive homer over the right field fence to cut the Tigers' deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning. In the fifth, Pittard singled up the middle and moved to second on Ryan Grippo's bunt single. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, but Allee lined into a double play as Grippo strayed too far off second base. It was Einertson who delivered the clutch hit to plate Pittard from third.
In the bottom of the seventh, Allee singled to center with two outs. Einertson drilled a 1-2 pitch to left center, allowing Allee to score from first. With his third RBI of the game, Einertson tied the contest 4-4.
The Spartans battled back in the ninth inning as Winemiller singled with one out and moved to third on Aaron Cain's single through the right side. Following a walk, Antonio Damiano was hit by an inside pitch from Nick Horvath, forcing in a run. The play was upheld despite the protests from Horvath, Allee and DePauw head coach Jake Martin, claiming that Damiano made no attempt to avoid being hit with the pitch.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Allee reached on a single to center, but Einertson fouled out to third base to end the contest.
Edward Abramson picked up the win, moving to 1-1 on the year after tossing two innings in relief.
Horvath dropped to 4-3 overall, going two innings in relief with four strikeouts and two walks. Hammel went four innings with three strikeouts, two walks and nine hits allowed. Andrew Quinn tossed three scoreless innings with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.
DePauw wraps up its non-conference schedule Wednesday, April 29, when they travel to Rose-Hulman for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The Tigers will learn of their North Coast Athletic Conference Cross-over opponent tomorrow night after the conclusion of the Ohio Wesleyan vs. Wittenberg doubleheader.
