Box Score 2 Crawfordsville, Ind. - With gusty winds blowing out at Goodrich Ballpark, DePauw and Wabash locked up in a high-scoring North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader as the Tigers won game one, 15-10, and the Little Giants grabbed the nightcap, 8-7.
With the split, DePauw moved to 14-17 overall and finished NCAC West play at 11-5. Wabash dropped to 12-19 and 4-8. The Tigers will finish no worse than second in the division and will host the NCAC Cross-over series May 2-3.
In the opener, six straight Tigers reached base with one out including five via hits as DePauw jumped out to a 5-0 lead. DePauw starter Mike Hammel held Wabash scoreless over the first 3 1/3 innings until Andrew Rodgers hit a solo homer in the fourth.
The Tigers scored three in the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out before Tate Stewart reached on an error that allowed Cory Meixner to score. Reid Pittard then followed with a two-run single to make it 8-1.
Wabash's Clint Scarborough singled home Tanner Watson in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-2. Connor Einertson, Collin Henry and Stewart each had RBI singles in the sixth and Pittard drove in one on a grounder to push the lead to 12-2.
The Little Giants added three in the bottom of the sixth, but DePauw matched that in the seventh as Einertson had a two-run single and Meixner an RBI double.
The first four Wabash batters in the seventh reached base as the Little Giants plated five.
DePauw banged out 18 hits as Ryan Allee had four for the second straight game. Stewart finished with three hits, while Pittard, Einertson, Meixner and Jack Thompson each had a pair.
Rodgers had three of Wabash's 14 hits with Watson, David Oliger, Scarborough and Cole Harlacher adding two apiece.
Hammel improved to 4-1 with the win, while Michael Herrmann dropped to 3-3.
In game two, DePauw again got out to a good start as Pittard led off the game with a walk, stole second and scored on Lucas Italiano's single.
Wabash took the lead with a five-run second before DePauw closed the gap to 5-4 in the third on Italiano's three-run homer. The Tigers evened the score at 5-5 in the fourth as Hammel led off with a single and later scored on Ryan Grippo's single to left.
Wabash took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Matt Spaulding led off with a double, moved to second on Austin Ellingwood's sacrifice bunt and scored on Lucas Stippler's single.
The Little Giants expanded the lead to 8-5 in the fifth as Spaulding delivered a two-run single that scored Scarborough and Rodgers.
DePauw loaded the bases with no outs in the six, but back-to-back forces at the plate and a groundout ended the threat.
The Tigers did score a pair in the eighth as Henry led off with a double and moved to third on Pittard's single. After Pittard was picked off at first, Grippo walked and Italiano delivered a two-run double to cut the Wabash lead to 8-7. Italiano advanced to third on a passed ball and Allee walked, but Italiano was thrown out at the plate on an attempted double steal.
DePauw totaled 14 hits with Italiano leading the way with three as well as six RBI. Pittard, Grippo, Allee, Hammel and Stewart had two hits apiece. Spaulding had four of Wabash's nine hits.
Riley Futterknecht dropped to 1-2 with the loss and Nick McCreary followed with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Austin Hawn improved to 3-1, while Josh Piercey picked up his first save.
DePauw takes on Anderson tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Grand Park in Westfield.
