Tigers Take Two From Bishops; Earn Series Split

Greencastle, Ind.- The Tigers earned a series split after sweeping Sunday's doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference action. DePauw used a strong pitching performance to take game one, 2-1 and blasted its way to a 13-1 victory in the nightcap.

With the wins DePauw moved to 9-15 overall and 6-4 in the NCAC, while the Battling Bishops fell to 16-7 on the year and 6-2 in conference play.

Lefty Jack Peck picked the right time to deliver his best outing of the 2015 season, grabbing a complete-game victory with six strikeouts, two walks and just five hits. Peck threw just 80 pitches in the seven-inning victory, allowing just one earned run and two extra-base hits.

The Tigers used back-to-back hits with two outs in the bottom of the first to seize an early lead. Lucas Italiano doubled to right and Ryan Allee followed with a single to right, plating Italiano.

Ohio Wesleyan tied the contest in the top of the second as C.J. Tosino tripled to right to start the inning. Devin Van Winkle hit an RBI single up the middle to knot the score.

In the bottom of the fifth, Collin Henry singled to first and advanced to second on a balk. Tate Stewart walked and Reid Pittard put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners. Ryan Grippo singled to right, scoring Henry and giving DePauw a 2-1 lead.

Peck took care of the rest, retiring the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings. The senior allowed a two-out walk in the seventh, but used a crafty move to pick off the runner, sealing the Tigers' victory.

Pete Munger took the loss, tossing 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and seven hits.

In game two, DePauw piled on 15 hits and 13 runs, while allowing just one run and three hits. The Tigers scored in seven of eight possible innings and tallied multiple runs in four frames.

Pittard reached on an error in the first and moved to second on Grippo's single. Italiano moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Pittard would score on a wild pitch. Cory Meixner singled to left, plating Grippo.

Henry drew a leadoff walk to start the second and advanced to second on Matt Dorsett's sacrifice bunt. Following a ground out, Pittard singled up the middle to give DePauw a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers tacked on four runs in the third as Italiano singled to right to open the frame. Meixner walked and Jack Thompson delivered a one-out double to center, scoring Italiano. Henry followed win an RBI single to center. With two outs Tate Stewart was hit by a pitch and Pittard singled down the left field line, plating Thompson and Henry.

Stewart blasted a pitch over the left field wall, giving the Tigers an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. DePauw added two runs in the sixth as Pittard notched his fourth and fifth RBIs of the day on a single through the left side, plating Henry and Dorsett.

In the seventh inning, Italiano hit a lead-off homer to right, extending the Tigers' lead to 11-1. Connor Einertson drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Collin Einertson's two-out single. Dorsett drove in Connor Einertson with an RBI single to center.

DePauw tallied its 13th run in the bottom of the eighth as Grippo reached on a one-out double to left. Italiano was hit by a pitch and Max Cohen singled to right to load the bases. Connor Einertson hit a ground ball deep in the hole at first that was bobbled, plating Grippo.

Starting pitcher Mike Hammel had an impressive outing on the mound to parallel the Tigers' offensive success. Hammel went 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and three hits. His only blemish came in the fourth inning as the Bishops were able to plate their only run.

Nick McCreary and Sam Comer combined to collect the final eight outs of the contest without allowing a hit. Grippo and Italiano paced the Tigers with four hits on the day, while Pittard added three hits and five RBI.

DePauw is back in action Wednesday, April 15, when they travel to Wittenberg for a NCAC doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
