Box Score 2 Greencastle, Ind.- The Tigers were unable to capitalize on a number of opportunities, leaving 18 runners on base in a doubleheader loss against Ohio Wesleyan, Saturday afternoon at Walker Field.
DePauw fell to 7-15 on the year and 4-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference action. The Battling Bishops took game one, 8-7 and won the nightcap, 4-2, moving to 16-5 overall and 6-0 in league play.
In game one, Ohio Wesleyan scored in the top of the second as C.J. Tosino singled to left, stole second and would later score on a wild pitch. The Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third, taking a 2-1 lead.
Tate Stewart doubled down the left field line and moved to third on Johnny Gbur's sacrifice bunt. Ryan Grippo delivered an RBI single up the middle, plating Stewart. Grippo advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Ryan Allee's single. Cory Meixner hit a deep fly ball to left, scoring Grippo.
Ohio Wesleyan capitalized on errors in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring a two runs in each frame.
Trailing 5-2, the Tigers battled back to score four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lucas Italiano drew a one-out walk and moved to second on Allee's single. Following a wild pitch, Meixner earned a walk to load the bases. Connor Einertson smashed a double to right field, clearing the bases. Mike Hammel followed with an RBI double down the left field line, giving DePauw a 6-5 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Tosino singled to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. Michael Blatchford doubled down the right field line, tying the contest. Trey Gluth walked and Blatchford stole third. Gluth stole second and Colin Stolly knocked a 2 RBI single to center.
The Tigers cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth on two hits and a passed ball. Grippo walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Allee singled to left advancing Grippo to third and Meixner hit a line shot that ricochet off the third baseman's glove, scoring Grippo. DePauw was unable to add another run, falling one run short.
Starter Riley Futterknecht took a no decision, tossing five innings with six hits, three strikeouts and just two earned runs. Eric Steele took the loss in relief, giving up two runs while recording just one out.
Will Clyne picked up the win in relief for Ohio Wesleyan, while Brett Kiser grabbed the save.
In game two, it was the Bishops who again took an early lead, scoring in the third inning. Stolly singled up the middle and advanced all the way to third on an errant pickoff throw. Justin Dages hit an RBI single to center, plating Stolly.
DePauw answered with one run in the fifth and sixth innings, taking a 2-1 lead. Meixner hit a leadoff singled in the fifth and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following an intentional walk to Einertson, Hammel moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Collin Henry's RBI ground out tied the contest.
Reid Pittard singled up the middle to start the sixth and moved to second on Grippo's sacrifice bunt. Italiano doubled to left center, plating Pittard.
The Bishops battled back to tie the contest in the seventh and take a 4-2 lead with two runs in the eighth. Steven Moore doubled to center and advanced to third on Tyler Flaherty's sacrifice bunt. Tosino doubled to right center, plating Moore. After Tosino stole third, Devin Van Winkle hit a double to left center, adding an insurance run for Ohio Wesleyan.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers were poised to tie the contest as Pittard reached on an error to start the frame. Grippo reached on a fielder's choice and Pittard moved to second on a throwing error. With one out in the inning, Allee reached on a throwing error by the third basemen. On the play, Pittard tried to score as the ball rolled away from the first basemen, but Pittard was retired on a bang-bang play at the plate.
DePauw had runners on with two outs in the ninth, but were unable to plate a run. Wyatt Spector took the loss, going 7.1 innings with nine hits, one walk and just three runs (two earned).
Freshmen Kevin Zullo grabbed the complete-game victory, scattering five hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
The two teams finish their conference series tomorrow, starting at 12:00 p.m. at Walker Field.
